Mathematics
Mathematics Department: The mathematics curriculum has a variety of courses designed to meet the diverse needs of the student body at Western High School. The following courses are offered: Algebra 1 (9), Geometry, Plane and Solid Geometry (H), Algebra 2, Algebra 2 (H), Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Students who enter Western in the ninth grade and enroll in Plane and Solid Geometry Honors are on track to take AP Calculus when they are seniors if their grades remain acceptable. This year students are not allowed to use calculators in the classroom in Algebra 1. This will better prepare our students to successfully pass the CAHSEE (Exit Exam) and improve our state mandated test scores. Teachers in the department encourage students to read the text by using graphic organizers, notebooks, and journals. This also encourages the improvement of student writing skills. This summer the department developed essential standards and benchmark assessments to help students be better prepared for testing purposes. Students must successfully pass each benchmark assessment or attend a tutoring program that has been implemented this year. Selected students have participated in the Kiwanis Bowl and Academic Decathlon. By attending some of these events, students have had the opportunity to compete with top students of other schools. Western High School students have performed admirably at these events.
