Science
Science Requirements: A minimum of 2 years of science are required for a diploma. Class Descriptions: GENERAL SCIENCE 1 (Grade 10): Laboratory course includes the biological interactions in the natural world. Skills are developed in the areas of observing, organizing, planning, communicating, and manipulating laboratory equipment. Prerequisite: None. GENERAL SCIENCE 2 (Grades 11-12): Laboratory course includes the physical and chemical interactions in the natural world. Skills are developed in the areas of observing, organizing, planning, communicating, and manipulating laboratory equipment. Prerequisite: None. BIOLOGY (P) (Grades 9-12): College prep course in laboratory science in which the relationships between living things and their environment are studied. This course includes the study of: life processes at cellular and molecular level, classification, genetics and reproduction. Prerequisite: Concurrent Algebra 1 or instructor's recommendation. BIOLOGY (HP) (Grades 9-10): This course includes the content of Biology. It is geared for accelerating the gifted student in the science curriculum. Prerequisite: Concurrent Algebra 1 or instructor's recommendation. CHEMISTRY (P) (Grades 10-12): College prep course in laboratory science which provides an introduction to the changes which occur in matter. This course includes the study of: physical and chemical changes, energy relationships, atomic theory, formula and equation writing. Students should be able to handle algebraic fundamentals and should expect to do homework on a daily basis. Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or instructor's recommendation. CHEMISTRY (HP) (Grades 10-12): This course includes the content of Chemistry. It is geared for accelerating the gifted student in the science curriculum. Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or instructor's recommendation. PHYSICS (P) (Grades 10-12): This is a college prep course in laboratory science. This course includes the study of: motion, forces, energy, momentum, heat, wave motion involving sound and light, electricity, magnetism, and nuclear physics. Prerequisite: Geometry PHYSICS (HP) (Grades 10-12): This course includes the content of Physics. It is geared for accelerating the gifted student in the science curriculum. Prerequisite: Geometry and instructor's recommendation. ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY (AP) (Grades 10-12): This course is designed only for the college-bound student. The approach in this course is similar to that of a college freshman biology course; therefore students will be academically challenged in-depth. Students who successfully complete the course will be expected to take the Advance Placement examination. Good results on this exam may lead to college credit and advanced college placement in this subject. Admission is based on grades in past science courses, recommendation of previous science teachers, a brief interview, and other indicators of success. Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry and instructor's recommendation. ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY (AP) (Grades 10-12): The approach in this course is similar to that of a college freshman chemistry course. Depth in chemical principles, theory, and supporting mathematics characterize the course. Students who successfully complete the course will be expected to take the Advanced Placement examination. Good results on this exam may lead to college credit and advanced college placement in this subject. Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry and instructor's recommendation. HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (P) (Grades 11-12): The goal of this course is to prepare a student to enter and health related field of study at the college/university level. The content of the course will include the study of each of the human systems, their structures and their functions. Appropriate lab experiments will be used to provide practical experience in the areas of anatomy and physiology. Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry and instructor's recommendation.
